Ingrown Toenail Surgical Treatment Options

Doctor treating a foot.

Ingrown toenails are a common foot ailment that we routinely see and treat in our Mechanicsburg office. They can cause mild to severe pain and even impact your ability to walk, but we can help.

Although conservative treatments can sometimes address ingrown toenails, more advanced ingrowns may need to be treated through ingrown toenail surgery. This type of surgery can be done on an outpatient basis and typically has a short recovery time. The experts at Foot & Ankle Specialists of Central PA can determine the severity of your ingrown toenail issue and develop the correct treatment plan for you.

Ingrown Toenail Surgery

We perform several levels of ingrown toenail surgery at Foot & Ankle Specialists in Mechanicsburg. For simple cases, we use a procedure referred to as a partial nail avulsion. The surgery is performed under local anesthesia, which numbs the entire region around your affected toe. We pull back the skin around the part of your toenail that has become ingrown and infected and remove the problematic portion of the nail. Any visible infection is removed, and the exposed surface is thoroughly cleaned. For this more minor ingrown toenail surgery, its hopeful the nail will regrow normally and the ingrowth will not recur.

If your ingrown toenail persists or is very serious, your doctor may recommend permanent nail avulsion as your ingrown toenail surgical technique. This level of surgery removes the nail matrix to prevent regrowth. The nail is carefully separated from the nail bed and removed with the nail matrix intact. Because this type of surgery is used to permanently remove the nail border, the nail bed is treated with a special chemical to prevent regrowth and thus recurrence of the ingrown toenail.
