Diabetic Foot Care

Practitioner Examining Patient Foot

For those who have been diagnosed with diabetes, foot care is an essential part of health management. Diabetics are at an increased risk for infections and other conditions, like athlete’s foot and warts. That’s why it’s so important to seek out specialists who can get your health back on track as soon as possible. Foot and Ankle Specialists of Central PA offers expert diabetic foot care to prevent and treat these complications the right way.

Diabetic Foot and Ankle Complications

Over time, the heightened glucose levels that diabetes causes can damage the nervous system, reducing sensation in certain parts of the body, like the feet. This makes it difficult for people with diabetes to sense cuts or wounds. In addition, diabetics have suppressed immune systems, which can slow down the overall healing process. Common foot conditions include.

Advanced Diabetic Care Services

If you have diabetes and are experiencing pain, tingling, burning, numbness, or any other uncomfortable symptoms in your feet or ankles, it’s important to seek treatment right away. During your appointment, the trusted team of physicians at our clinic will thoroughly evaluate your feet and recommend a personalized treatment plan. Here’s what you can expect.

General Assessment

You will be asked about your health history and previous foot and ankle concerns. Our team may also check your footwear to make sure it isn’t too tight or uncomfortable. To increase your comfort and support, we may recommend custom orthotics or another solution.

Dermatological Assessment

Our providers will then examine your skin for issues like blisters, calluses, cracking, dryness, and ulcers. They will also examine your toenails and look between your toes. Our clinic offers many state-of-the-art treatment options, such as advanced wound care, MLS® Laser Therapy, and more, to quickly address any issues.

Neurologic Assessment

To check the sensation in your feet, our providers may perform a monofilament test, tuning fork and visual perception test, and/or pinprick test. They will also check your ankle reflexes with a small medical-grade mallet to be sure you aren’t at risk for any complications. If you do have decreased sensation in your feet, our team will provide you with diabetic foot care strategies that you can practice to prevent complications from developing.

Musculoskeletal Assessment

Next, we’ll look for any structural abnormalities in your feet and suggest relevant treatments if any are spotted. For example, if you have a bunion, our team may recommend that you receive 3D bunion correction.

Vascular Assessment

Finally, our providers may assess the blood flow in your feet by using ultrasound technology. Depending on their findings, they may recommend Extracorporeal Pulse Activation Technology® (EPAT®) or another treatment to enhance your circulation.

What You Can Do

Before you leave our office, our team will educate you about how you can keep your feet healthy. Some strategies we recommend to our patients with diabetes include:

  • Daily at-home feet checks
  • Diabetes management
  • Good foot hygiene
  • Moisturize the feet (NOTE: do not moisturize between your toes as this can increase the likelihood of fungal infection)
  • Promote good circulation by wiggling your toes and regularly changing the position of your feet
  • Frequent foot and ankle checkups
